Another Trump Administration Distraction…

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER — Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday declared “a new era of American leadership in space” and vowed that astronauts launched from Florida’s Space Coast will someday walk on Mars.

“Here, from this bridge to space, our nation will return to the moon, and we will put American boots on the face of Mars,” Pence said.

Pence addressed several hundred NASA employees, guests and dignitaries during a tour of Kennedy Space Center, days after President Donald Trump named him to lead the relaunched National Space Council.

“Today, I come to assure you, the men and women of NASA, and all those at this gateway to the stars, where the aspirations of the American people have taken flight, that under President Donald Trump, America will lead in space once again,” he said.

We are swimming in troubled times. With an unpopular, dysfunctional, and  ineffective administration our nation is adrift with no substantial direction in sight. With the legitimate news media under constant attack from Trump combined with his incessant lying the majority of Americans are left shaking their heads in disbelief. Then there is the Russian Trump connection and Putin meddling in our national election. While there has yet to surface a smoking gun investigation into the Trump administration continue. Of course there are many other national issues to resolve as well. But , but, but,  remember Benghazi and e-mails? Somehow they keep coming up, somewhere or another.

On the world front there is ISIS, North Korea, global warming, and  trade imbalances just to name a few. All serious and all deserving of action. Perhaps Trump will actually focus his administration on serous domestic issues and international issues following G-20. But, we aren’t holding our breath.

It is easier to focus on distractions and ramp up national patriotic fervor than to concretely address real problems. Which is exactly what Pence’s announcement is all about. Don’t get us wrong, we’re all for science and scientific discovery. Space exploration certainly should be a part of our efforts to expand scientific knowledge. But American boots on Mars? Really? For what purpose? What’s the anticipated benefits? What will be the likely huge cost to taxpayers? Given our current technology continued unmanned space flights to expand our knowledge of the solar system is more sensible.

And we push on…

Action Against All Undocumented Immigrants To Increase…

So, who’s running deportation efforts/actions? Trump’s “official” aims did not go as far as the story below. Perhaps the “official” statements from the Trump camp are muses? We’ll wait…

From Pro Publica – The head of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement unit in charge of deportations has directed his officers to take action against all undocumented immigrants they may cross paths with, regardless of criminal histories. The guidance appears to go beyond the Trump administration’s publicly stated aims, and some advocates say may explain a marked increase in immigration arrests.

In a February memo, Matthew Albence, a career official who heads the Enforcement and Removal Operations division of ICE, informed his 5,700 deportation officers that, “effective immediately, ERO officers will take enforcement action against all removable aliens encountered in the course of their duties.”

The Trump administration, including Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, has been clear in promising to ramp up immigration enforcement, but has so far emphasized that its priority was deporting immigrants who posed a public safety threat. Indeed, Kelly, to whom Albence ultimately reports, had seemed to suggest a degree of discretion when he told the agencies under his command earlier this year that immigration officers “may” initiate enforcement actions against any undocumented person they encountered. That guidance was issued just a day before Albence sent the memo to his staff.

Trump At G-20…

The BLOTUS is at the G-20 summit. Things went well in Poland for him, in no small part because he was able to get the Polish government to bus in folks from all over Poland and orchestrate a yuuuuuge crowd for him to boast about..

Then there is this:

Mr. Trump wants the United States to wield its economic dominance to dictate the rules of global trade, but other countries seem unwilling to follow. As if to make that point, the European Union and Japan agreed on Thursday to the outlines of a trade deal that would diminish opportunities for American companies.

We are guessing The BLOTUS, even given all his smarts and wisdom, has yet to figure out we (the USA) isn’t the only game on the globe anymore, therefore we can no longer call all the shots. Not to worry, other important and influential countries will no doubt keep reminding him. We’re sure he’ll figure it out sooner or later. Probably later.

Does anyone else think that maybe Trump, by his words and actions, has succeeded in alienating many of the leaders he must now work with on the world stage? The likely result being he, and the USA by extension, will be less able to arrive at the best deal for our nation.

Time will tell… Moving on.
