Another Trump Administration Distraction…

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER — Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday declared “a new era of American leadership in space” and vowed that astronauts launched from Florida’s Space Coast will someday walk on Mars.

“Here, from this bridge to space, our nation will return to the moon, and we will put American boots on the face of Mars,” Pence said.

Pence addressed several hundred NASA employees, guests and dignitaries during a tour of Kennedy Space Center, days after President Donald Trump named him to lead the relaunched National Space Council.

“Today, I come to assure you, the men and women of NASA, and all those at this gateway to the stars, where the aspirations of the American people have taken flight, that under President Donald Trump, America will lead in space once again,” he said.

We are swimming in troubled times. With an unpopular, dysfunctional, and  ineffective administration our nation is adrift with no substantial direction in sight. With the legitimate news media under constant attack from Trump combined with his incessant lying the majority of Americans are left shaking their heads in disbelief. Then there is the Russian Trump connection and Putin meddling in our national election. While there has yet to surface a smoking gun investigation into the Trump administration continue. Of course there are many other national issues to resolve as well. But , but, but,  remember Benghazi and e-mails? Somehow they keep coming up, somewhere or another.

On the world front there is ISIS, North Korea, global warming, and  trade imbalances just to name a few. All serious and all deserving of action. Perhaps Trump will actually focus his administration on serous domestic issues and international issues following G-20. But, we aren’t holding our breath.

It is easier to focus on distractions and ramp up national patriotic fervor than to concretely address real problems. Which is exactly what Pence’s announcement is all about. Don’t get us wrong, we’re all for science and scientific discovery. Space exploration certainly should be a part of our efforts to expand scientific knowledge. But American boots on Mars? Really? For what purpose? What’s the anticipated benefits? What will be the likely huge cost to taxpayers? Given our current technology continued unmanned space flights to expand our knowledge of the solar system is more sensible.

And we push on…
