It isn’t as if we don’t already know how hypocritical the unhinged rightwing is, but, here is one ore example. From THE HILL.
Former defense attorney and Fox News anchor Gregg Jarrett called grand juries an “undemocratic farce” on Thursday, just one day after writing an op-ed asking why a grand jury had not been impaneled for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s mishandling of classified information.
Jarrett weighed in on special counsel Robert Mueller’s decision to impanel a grand jury in the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election.
“There’s only one other nation in the world other than the U.S. that employs a grand jury — it’s Liberia,” Jarrett, a former Court TV host, said Thursday on “Hannity.”
“And there’s a reason why, because everybody now realizes that grand juries are an undemocratic farce.”
“The defense is never there to cross-examine witnesses and to challenge the evidence. Prosecutors spoon-feed only incriminating evidence and nothing exculpatory. It is as undemocratic as you can get, it is the antithesis of justice,” he continued.
A grand jury is a legal body that is empowered to conduct official proceedings to investigate potential criminal conduct and to determine whether criminal charges should be brought. A grand jury may compel the production of documents and may compel the sworn testimony of witnesses to appear before it. Grand juries stop cases from proceeding to trial in criminal courts when they determines there is insufficient evidence to support bringing charges. Not sure how this is undemocratic, but alleging it is makes for a good talking point. The process once charges are brought proceeds exactly as Jarrett thinks is democratic.
When a grand jury would suit his, and the right’s purposes it a mighty fine idea. Apparently not so when it doesn’t. Hypocrisy Grande.
It is clear that the Trump – Russian connection is real and even reasonably possible that collusion did exist. Given everything we know so far from the ongoing investigations it is only proper that Mueller is empanelling a grand jury.
Given Jarrett’s remarks that follow it is obvious he, as well as the rightwing that supports every Trump move (33% by most recent repots) are going to continue making this 100% political.
“And it’s even worse here because Robert Mueller impaneled a Washington, D.C., grand jury, where Donald Trump got a mere 11,000 votes compared to Hillary Clinton’s 260,000 votes. I daresay there is probably not a single person on that grand jury that likes Donald Trump. So it is doubly unfair,” Jarrett concluded.
“There is something fundamentally unfair when a special counsel is appointed to investigate the winner of a presidential contest, but not the loser,” wrote Jarrett.
Waiting to see where it all goes from here. And waiting for justice to be served, whatever that may be.
